Do you have old local newspapers? What about old issues of major newspapers from the continental United States?
Answer
Yes, UH Mānoa Library has a large number of older newspapers from Hawaiʻi and the continental United States. The Hawaiian Collection provides an excellent research guide for Hawaiʻi newspapers.
Major newspapers from around the United States are available online. For example:
New York Times digital edition. (Guide to help set up your NYTimes.com account.)
Wall Street Journal is available in our ProQuest One Business database.
Many other major newspapers are available in our Newspaper Source Plus and U.S. West Newsstream databases.
Another great resource for older newspapers is Chronicling America provided by the Library of Congress. You can search and read historic newspaper pages, including several from Hawaiʻi.
Older issues of selected major newspapers are available in microfilm format as well. You can search OneSearch and use the "Newspapers" filter to find specific publications. Ask our library staff to help you find old issues of specific newspapers.
